This Swann DVR camera compatibility guide helps customers find replacement security cameras that work with Swann surveillance systems. The guide and FAQ is also helpful if you are looking for a replacement DVR that works with Swann cameras.

NVR camera systems use wireless and IP cameras whereas DVR security systems use analog (CCTV) cameras. With Swann you can mix and match indoor and outdoor cameras, choose your camera resolution from 1080p to 4k ultra high-definition, as well as choose cameras with two-way audio and night vision.


This guide is for Swann DVRs that use hard wired security cameras via coax cable and BNC connectors. You can see what BNC video inputs looks like on the back of a DVR in the above image. Network video recorders (NVRs) will not be covered in this guide. I will write a Swann NVR / IP camera compatibility guide in the future.

Swann DVR camera compatibility is categorized below according to the video format (camera type) that each DVR model supports. Some DVRs support more than one type which is why some DVRs are listed in more than one category. DVRs that are compatible with more than one video surveillance format are known as hybrid DVRs.

720p AHD Cameras

These Swann DVRs only work analog CCTV (CVBS) and 720p AHD cameras. They do not work with 1080p AHD cameras.

  1. What type of cable is used to connect a CCTV camera to a Swann DVR?

  2. Can I extend the length of the cables that were included with my Swann system?
    Yes, you can extend the distance of cables included with Swann DVR systems by using a female to female BNC connector to connect an additional security camera cable. Please note that pre-made cables are more limited in the total distance they can be run. In my experience, you can not run pre-made cables longer than 200-250 feet max.
  3. How can I connect my Swann camera directly to a TV?
    If you are using an analog HD (AHD) or HD-TVI format Swann security camera, you can use this BNC to HDMI converter.
  4. Can I split the video signal of my Swann camera so that I can connect it to two devices?
    Yes, CCTV camera splitters are available to share the video signal from one camera with multiple devices. Video amplifiers are also available on that page that can boost the video signal of security cameras that use RG59 cable.
  5. Can I use CAT-5 or CAT-6 network cable to wire Swann CCTV cameras?

Applicable to these models: NHD-805, NHD-806, NHD-810, NHD-811, NHD-815, NHD-815AF, NHD-816, NHD-817, NHD-818, NHD-819.

For the cameras listed above, there is an extra cable that isn't a connector but rather, a reset button.Steps to reset the camera:

  • Disconnect the camera from the NVR (or from a PoE switch or a power adapter) to turn it off completely.
  • Press and hold the reset button.
  • While holding down the reset button, plug the camera back to the NVR (or to the PoE switch or a power adapter) and continue holding down the reset for 30 seconds, then release.
  • After that, the camera's credentials and settings will go to factory default. Access the camera with the default password or initialize it again.

How to reset NHD-851

Step 1. Unscrew and remove the camera's dome cover.Step 2. Disconnect and reconnect power (Ethernet cable from NVR or PoE switch to the camera), then press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds. Release the button and the camera will go to factory default settings.

Swann Camera 2.4ghz

For most of the camera models mentioned above, there is a reset button at the back of the camera. NHD-850/880 is a different story, as mentioned in the manual, you need to unscrew the bottom cover of the camera to access the reset button.Steps to reset the camera:

  • Reboot the camera by disconnecting the power source (Ethernet for PoE and power adapter for non-PoE) then plugging it back in.
  • Within 10 seconds of powering up the camera, press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds.
  • The camera will be reset to factory settings.

Another way to reset the camera is by using the username admin and as password the MAC address of the device (uppercase, NO punctuation)
